Students finalists in essay contest

Hawaii Preparatory Academy seventh-graders Valerie Hageraats and Brandon Melton were named finalists in the “Inspired in Hawaii” essay contest sponsored by the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation.

The contest is designed to help children in Hawaii “think big and help make Hawaii a better place. Hageraats’ essay was titled “Weak Education and Schools in Hawaii,” and Melton’s essay was titled “For Hawaii’s Future.” Both students were recognized during an awards program in Honolulu on Jan. 18.

Historian to speak at library

North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau will host twoâ “talk story” sessions on Hawaii’s history with North Kohala historian Boyd D. Bond at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, and Monday, March 12.

The first session will focus on “The Royal Women of Hawaii.” The second presentation will discuss “The Story of Kohala,” giving an overview of the history of Kohala from its beginnings to the present. Each session is one hour.

Bond’s knowledge of Hawaii’s history stems from his academic studies and from a lifetime spent in Hawaii as a sixth-generation descendent of early western settlers in Hawaii. Bond was raised in Hawaii in a sugar plantation family, living on plantations throughout the state.

Call the North Kohala Public Library at 889-6655 for more information about this lecture series. Contact the library three weeks in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is required.

Tickets can be purchased from any Waiakea Lions member and at the door.
